Golden Dragon Embroidery

There is growing interest in 3D embroidery, particularly a technique known as "stumpwork." I love the idea of combining the softness of fabric with the texture of thread and sculptural elements. This inspired me to create a fantastical creature that combines the features of a cat and a bird—something glorious and heavenly. I envisioned a powerful yet gentle being, reminiscent of the kind that might inhabit Heaven.

To emphasize the magnificence of this creature, I explored a complementary color scheme of yellow and purple. For an added touch of sparkle, I incorporated seed beads and sequins, highlighting the curves with a warm silver metal cord.

Once the creature was completed, I wanted to place it in a wondrous environment. Therefore, I created a background featuring a starry night sky and soft clouds. Below, I have outlined the step-by-step process, and I hope you find it helpful and inspiring.

The first step- is planning! It can't be underestimated!
I explored the color possibilities and the size of the dragon. Later this sketch will also serve as a guide for embroidery.

The head is by far, the most complex part of the dragon. I build layers of his face
in felt and inserted the eyes. Then, added the additional layer of the "iron on" stabilizer with the pattern.
I embroidered the ears separately because they are 3 three-dimensional "add" I sewed the wire in the edges of the ears for flexibility

The face is finished and I am ready to put it together with the rest of the body.

There is also felt padding on the body as well, for additional dimension.

I decided to complete this composition as a collage, making the background separate.
Therefore, the little guy was cut out

I added a little colored netting to blend the dragon into the background more naturally and give it a mysterious mood...
