Creating "AVA"
Do you have a favorite art form? Mine is sculpture, and I love creating art dolls. It's an underappreciated art form, but I find it to be one of the most rewarding. I first got interested in doll-making about a decade ago, after seeing some incredible works on the Internet.
What makes doll-making so special is the variety of materials you get to work with. It involves sculpting, engineering, painting, clothing design, and even hair styling. You have the opportunity to work with form, color, and texture, and the results are always unique and beautiful.
But what I love most about art dolls is their personality. As you work on a doll, you get to think up their stories and names. It's a gradual process, but it's so fulfilling to see your creation come to life!
Take a look at "Ava," a doll I completed a couple of years ago. I enjoyed every stage of the creative process. If you've never tried doll-making before, I highly recommend it!
I started by casting her in cold porcelain and sanding, smoothing, and sculpting giving her her own unique features. |
This stage of patience. It is very important to get the mechanics of doll movement and balance just right. |
Adding color is one of my favorite steps. Color brings life and creates personality. |
I prefer to make my own wigs. |
It took around a month of work, but Ava is finally done! |
I choose the Renaissance style for her dress because it is my favorite and it went well with her personality |
Last but not least, the presentation. Taking good pictures of the work couldn't be underestimated. |
